SUPPORT LIFE, LAND, CULTURE & HUMAN RIGHTS

The U'wa are sending a three person delegation to Los Angeles to confront
Occidental Petroleum about Oxy's plans to drill on traditional U'wa land.

The U'wa Week of Action will be a great opportunity to support the U'wa
campaign for life, land and culture and to meet the U'wa in person. Please
get involved, the U'wa are calling for international solidarity for their
struggle and they need your support!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR U'WA WEEK OF ACTION

** Earth Day Saturday, April 22nd 11 AM (All Day)**

Join the Indigenous Village. Call for an end to fossil fuels and
exploitation of indigenous people on Earth Day 2000 at Exposition Park in
Los Angeles. Representatives from the U'wa and Dineh people will be
available to talk to people about their struggles as they demand clean
energy and human rights. The U'wa will be speaking on stage in the early
afternoon.

** Midnight Special Bookstore Presentation **
Tuesday April 25th 7:30 PM 3rd street Promenade in Santa Monica

Goldman Award winner Berito Cobaria and Roberto Perez, President of the U'wa
Tribal Authority will talk about the U'wa struggle to prevent Occidental
Petroleum from drilling on their traditional, sacred homeland in the Eastern
Andes of Colombia.

The U'wa will speak about the direct actions they have taken in defense of
their land, the role of the Colombian Military in their area, and legal
battle they have been fighting, and so far winning!

** U'wa Vigil at CEO Ray Irani's Neighborhood**
Wed, April 26th 7:00 PM

We will meet at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Bel Air Drive, opposite South
Beverly Glen, 1 block W. of North Beverly Glen. There is street parking on
Beverly Glen south of Sunset, and on its side streets. BRING: candles,
friends, drums. Carpool if you can. Try to wear light colored clothing so
we are more visible.

 

** Demonstration at Oxy's Annual Shareholder Meeting **

Pico and Main, Santa Monica Civic Center Auditorium, Santa Monica

Join hundreds of U'wa supporters as we call for a total divestment from Oxy!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!

Earth Ways and Amazon Watch are hosting the U'wa delegates. We need
volunteers who can help during the week with logistical, food prep, and
transportation needs and all around help make our special guests feel
welcome during their week stay in Los Angeles. In short, we need volunteers
for all of the events. Specific needs include:

* Logistical support (host committee to help at Earth Ways)
* Phone banking and promoting the event
* Experienced Spanish/ English translators to take turns translating for
the U'wa
* Drummers / Musicians for demonstration on the 28th
