Oil Campaigner
Job Opportunity @ Project Underground
Closing Date: 8th November 1999

Organization Overview
Project Underground is a non-profit human rights organization dedicated
to building community power in the face of abuse by the mining and
oil industries. We do this through a sophisticated information program
and by developing meaningful partnerships with communities threatened
by energy and mineral development. Project Underground currently
has five staff, and a position managed jointly with the Indigenous
Environmental Network. For more
information please check out http://www.moles.org.

Job Concept
The Oil Campaigner is responsible for maintaining the organization’s
oil campaign, by organizing set pieces of the oil program’s workplan and by leading campaign work.

The oil program hinges on individual case campaigns, wherein Project
Underground has partnered with particular peoples fighting Big Oil.
At the moment this includes the U’wa of Colombia – in their struggle
with Occidental Petroleum; as well as the Ogoni and Ijaw of the
Niger Delta, who are dealing with Shell, Chevron and many other
oil corporations. The overarching theme of our work is to move oil
companies out of the petroleum exploration business, which not only
impinges on critical ecosystems and the
homes of indigenous communities like the U’wa, but which is unnecessary
given global warming. Much of this job will be to build a constituency
of support for these cases and strategies.

Campaigning areas of responsibility include:
- Undertake and initiate pieces of campaign strategy determined with Board and staff
- Work directly with communities to support their needs in struggle with oil
companies
- Work with activist networks and in coalition with other groups to build
the movement around the oil industry
- Organize public speaking and other events to publicize campaign issues and
our work
- Write letters, articles, and targeted materials to maintain pressure on
campaign targets
- Coordinate direct actions and other pressure tactics to push for change
from corporate and other targets in our campaigns
- Keep correspondence with and a watching brief over partners and other
communities, problem areas and rising issues for future campaign work.

As well the Oil Campaigner will be asked to develop various materials with
the Project Underground’s Information Coordinator on an as needed basis.
This would include producing updated factsheets and public education pieces
on campaign issues; contributing regularly to our twice-monthly newsletter
and on-line information database; supporting the design and innovation of
campaign information on the website; generating postcards, posters,
slideshows and other multimedia materials for public education work on our
campaigns

Finally the Oil Campaigner, like all staff, will be involved in Office &
Administrative support work including assisting with financial management
and fundraising by working on grants, reports, and budgetting; organizing
campaign-related mailings, and supporting direct mail appeals based on the
oil campaign; and assisting with other office duties, including answering
the phone and doing chores, as requested by the Associate Director.

Also, as with all staff, the Oil Campaigner will be expected to participate
in long-term and strategic planning with the Board and staff. Over time,
s/he will come to work in a team with the Oil Campaign Coordinator -- a
vacant position to be filled in year 2000.

The Oil Campaigner is a new position at Project Underground. It is an
excellent opportunity for someone with organizing skills to take on the
challenge of forcing change for human rights and environmental justice, in
the most powerful business on Earth. The rewards will be many, not least
working closely with inspiring communities struggling with this industry. A
full-time salary between $28,000 and $30,000 per annum will be offered
depending on experience. Fluency in Spanish or another language is
preferred.
We are an affirmative action employer encouraging women and those of diverse
racial, social and ethnic backgrounds to apply. Please do so by November
8th.
