NGOs MEET WITH TRADITIONAL DINE' AND HOPI ELDERS

On February 3, 1998,  Mr. Abdelfattah Amor, the Special Rapporteur on Religious Intolerance of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, visited Black Mesa. This was the only on-site visit with Indigenous peoples during his trip to the United States where, for the first time, the United States is being formally investigated by the United Nations for alleged Violations of Freedom of Religion or Belief. This historic event was organized in cooperation with a circle of Dineh people, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the Office of the Special Rapporteur in Geneva, Switzerland and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, coordinating all the necessary protocols for NGO participation and media coverage.
