See efax file at http://www.egroups.com/group/global-peace-walk/254.html
The referenced efax file contains five pages of information
documenting the
previous intentions of the Hopi Tribal Council to construct two
new coal
stripmines in the area generally known as Big Mountain where the
Dineh
(Navajo) people are under orders to "relocate" and yet
the Hopi Tribal
Council still maintains to this day that the Big Mountain relocation
program
is not connected in any way to any plans to increase or expand
the strip
mining on the Black Mesa of which Big Mountain is a part.
These five pages include a cover letter/memorandum from the
Indian Law
Resource Center in Washington DC dated March 22, 1989, addressed
to Ros
George and Thomas Banyacya; a three page document composed by
the same
lawyers at ILRC also dated March 22, 1989, entitled "Behind
the Big Mountain
relocations: New evidence about mineral development plans of the
Hopi Tribal
Council" (citing as evidence documents and maps filed by
the Hopi Tribal
Council in Case No.6417 of the Arizona Superior Court for the
County of
Arizona as claim for additional coal slurry lines water allocation
from the
Little Colorado River System); and one of the two maps mentioned
in this
document showing the proposed locations of the planned coal mines
on Hopi
Partition Lands and the proposed location of a new coal fired
electric power
plant (the second map mentioned in the document is too blurry
to fax).
Perhaps the present day Hopi Tribal Council authorities are
unaware of these
1989 plans of their predecessors? Was this a coal mining plan
that was
later dropped by the Hopi Tribal Council for some reason, like
the water
allocation was not granted, and now the present Hopi Tribal Council
leaders
are either unaware or do not want to admit to this earlier plan
which seems
to factually contradict their assertions of today that increasing
the coal
mining is not a motivation for the Big Mountain Dineh relocation?
