Background

A 1996 public law co-sponsored by Arizona Senator and potential Republican
presidential candidate John McCain allocated $25 million dollars towards the
eviction and relocation of more than 3,000 Dine' from their homeland. Now
the Dine' face a deadline of February 1, 2000 for their forced relocation.
This coupled with the catastrophic effects, including respiratory illnesses
caused by dust rising from mines and the desecration of burial sites, of
coal mining by Peabody Western Coal Company have caused an international
outcry against the attrocities against these people. Everyday in Los Angeles
more than two million homes are powered with electricity produced by the
Mohave Generating Station in Nevada which is fueled by coal from the
Peabody's Black Mesa Mine. This dirty energy is brought to Los Angeles
courtesy of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Southern
California Edison who combined own 76% of the Mohave Generating Station, one
of the highest emitters of global warming gases in North America. It is time
for Los Angeles to call on the responsibility of our energy companies and
our political leaders to put a stop to the genocide being committed in
America every day......
