U'wa Indians Win Injunction
Against Occidental in Colombian Courts
In Washington U'wa Roberto Perez Offers Statement

Washington, DC (March 31) -- Handing the U'wa an important victory, a
Colombian court has ordered Occidental Petroleum Corp to halt all
construction work on the Gibraltar 1 well site on sacred ancestral land of
the U'wa tribe. The court injunction came down Thursday and was announced
this afternoon in Colombia by Alberto Calderon, president of the state oil
company Ecopetrol.

According to Reuters, the judge ruled that the drilling on the site would
violate "fundamental rights" of the U'wa people including their right to
life.

Roberto Perez, the President of the U'wa Traditional Authority who has been
in Washington since March 27 for meetings with the US Government and Oxy
investors, issued the following statement in response to the verdict:

"The injunction speaks of the suspension of the project not cancellation.
We have taken an important step and are happy because we have advanced in
our struggle even though this has come at great sacrifice. We must defend
the life of the U'wa and that is why we are here in Washington turning to
international support because in Colombia our demands had been falling on
deaf ears. Today we have been speaking with members of Congress explaining
the violations of our rights. We have asked members of Congress to give us
their solidarity and pressure the president of the Republic of Colombia for
the cancellation of the project in Samoré on our ancestral territory."

Washington, DC (31 de marzo) -Otorgando al pueblo U'wa una victoria
importante, una corte Colombiana ha ordenado que la OXY pare todo trabajo de
construción en el sitio de perforación, Gibraltar I, en la tierra sagrada
del pueblo U'wa. La tutela de la corte se entregó el jueves y se anunció
esta tarde por Alberto Calderón, presidente de la compañia petrolera estatal
Ecopetrol.

Según Reuters, el juez falló que la perforación en el sitio violaría
"derechos fundamentales" del pueblo U'wa incluyendo su derecho a la vida.

Roberto Perez, presidente de Cabildo Mayor U'wa estando en Washington desde
27 de marzo para reuniones con el gobierno de los Estados Unidos e
inversionistas de OXY, emitió la siguiente declaración en respuesta al
fallo:

"La tutela habla de la suspensión del proyecto y no de su cancelación. Hemos
tomado un paso importante y estamos contentos porque hemos avanzado en
nuestra lucha, aunque eso sea logrado con grandes sacrificios. Debemos
defender la vida del pueblo U'wa y por eso estamos aquí en Washington para
acudir al apoyo internacional, porque en Colombia nuestras demandas cayeron
en oídos sordos. Hoy hemos hablado con congresistas, explicando las
violaciones de nuestros derechos. Hemos solicitado a los congresistas que
nos brinden su solidaridad y que presionen al Presidente de la República de
Colombia para que se cancele el proyecto en el Bloque Samoré, ubicado en
nuestro territorio ancestral."

El Señor Pérez estará disponible para entrevistas en Washington hasta la
tarde de sábado y en los Estados Unidos hasta fines de la próxima semana.
