Demonstration outside Occidental Petroleum annual shareholders
meeting
Santa Monica Civic Auditorium
Pico and Main in Santa Monica
Drum, chant, and sing along with hundreds of U'wa supporters
as we call
for a total divestment from Occidental Petroleum.
The U'wa Indigenous People of Colombia are in a life-and-death
struggle
to protect their traditional culture and sacred cloud forest homeland
from an oil drilling project by the Los Angeles-based Occidental
Petroleum (OXY). The U'wa are adamantly opposed to the drilling
and say
they are willing to die defending their land. It is predicted
that the
project will lead to increased violence and environmental destruction
as
seen in other oil regions of Colombia. Despite this, OXY has
already
begun clearing the area and is moving in equipment with the help
of the
Colombian armed forces. The U'wa have responded. Several thousand
U'wa
and local supporters have been blockading the only road in the
area
since early February. OXY has been airlifting in construction
materials. Last month, three U'wa children died as a result of
a
military action intended to break up the blockade. The U'wa are
calling
for international support and solidarity. We are calling on
OXY
investors to divest. In a major victory for the U'wa, Colombian
courts
ordered OXY to halt all operations on March 30th. OXY is appealing
the
decision, but the resistance continues.
This demonstration is sponsored by Action Resource Center,
Amazon Watch,
Earthways, National Lawyers Guild, Office of the Americas, Project
for Human
Economic and
Environmental Defense (HEED), Rainforest Action Network, Southern
California
Fair Trade Network.
